Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK)

Apple's translation layer lets you run Windows games on Mac. Similar concept to Proton on Linux.

Using CrossOver (Easiest Method)

CrossOver ($74) wraps GPTK in a user-friendly interface:

  1. Install CrossOver
  2. Click "Install a Windows Application"
  3. Search for the game or point to an installer
  4. CrossOver handles the rest

Using Whisky (Free)

Whisky is a free, open-source GPTK wrapper:

  1. Install with brew install --cask whisky
  2. Create a "bottle" (a Windows environment)
  3. Install games into the bottle
  4. Launch and play

Not all games work. Check AppleGamingWiki for compatibility reports before buying.

macOS supports game controllers natively.

Performance Tips for Gaming

The MacBook Neo (8GB RAM, A18 Pro) is suitable for casual to mid-tier gaming. For best performance:

  1. Close other apps before gaming: more RAM and GPU available
  2. Plug in: Gaming drains battery fast. Use the charger.
  3. Lower resolution in demanding games: 1080p internal resolution often looks fine on the 13" display
  4. Enable Game Mode: macOS Tahoe automatically prioritizes game performance when a game is fullscreen
  5. Keep macOS updated: Metal (Apple's GPU API) and GPTK improve with each update
