Gatekeeper and App Security

macOS prevents you from running unverified software:

  • App Store apps: Reviewed by Apple. Safest option.
  • Identified developers: Apps signed with an Apple developer certificate. Generally safe.
  • Unidentified developers: macOS blocks these by default. Only allow if you trust the source.

To open a blocked app: System Settings > Privacy & Security > scroll down > "Open Anyway."

Only bypass Gatekeeper for apps from developers you trust (like open-source tools from GitHub).
