Screenshots and Screen Recording
I hit Print Screen. Nothing happened. I looked at the keyboard. There is no Print Screen key. I checked again because surely Apple wouldn't remove the screenshot button from a computer keyboard. They did. They replaced it with a globe emoji key. I'm not making this up. The key that screenshots your screen was replaced with a key that opens an emoji picker.
Anyway. Mac screenshots use Cmd + Shift plus a number. Three combos to learn. Honestly, once you know them, they're faster than the Windows flow. I'm annoyed about that too.
The Three Shortcuts

Cmd + Shift + 4 is the one you'll use most. Crosshair appears, drag a rectangle, done. Hold Space while dragging to reposition the selection without resizing. A small thing that saves a surprising amount of re-takes.
Cmd + Shift + 4 then Space turns the crosshair into a camera icon. Hover over any window and click. You get the window, perfectly cropped, with a drop shadow. No trimming in Paint. No "oh I accidentally got half of my desktop background." This feature alone puts Mac screenshots ahead of Win + Shift + S. Windows users don't want to hear this but it's true.
The Toolbar
Cmd + Shift + 5 opens the Screenshot Toolbar at the bottom of the screen:
- Full screen, window, or selection capture
- Screen recording (entire screen or selected area)
- Timer (5 or 10 seconds)
- Change save location
- Show or hide the mouse pointer
Screen recording is built in. On Windows you'd reach for Xbox Game Bar, which is named after a gaming console for recording a Zoom call. Peak Microsoft branding.
Where Screenshots Go
Desktop. As PNG files named Screenshot [date] at [time].png. Your Desktop fills up fast. Mine looked like a crime scene after two weeks.
To change the save location: Cmd + Shift + 5, click Options, pick a different folder. I made a ~/Screenshots folder. Basic hygiene.
The Floating Thumbnail
After every screenshot, a small thumbnail appears in the bottom right for about 5 seconds. Click it to annotate, crop, or share. Drag it to drop the image into a document or chat. Ignore it and the file saves normally. This is genuinely clever UI. Apple gets credit here.

One important difference: Windows screenshots go to the clipboard by default. Mac screenshots save as files by default. To copy to clipboard instead, add Ctrl to any screenshot shortcut. Cmd + Ctrl + Shift + 4 selects a region and copies it. Four modifier keys at once. Your fingers will look like they're playing a chord on a piano, but it works.
